Description

In 2021 a health equity scoring system was implemented and is included in all complications submitted to M&M conference for the University of Chicago Department of Surgery. The new classification system was found to be effective at our institution in increasing understanding of how access to care and bias plays a role in surgical complications. It also appeared to increase the confidence of members of our department in identifying when bias and access issues contribute to complications as well as their comfort in discussing it with colleagues. At this point, we would like to move beyond our institution and pilot at institutions across the country to assess its effectiveness.

Specific Aims

To determine the impact of a novel grading system aimed at exploring the interaction between surgical complications and health inequities during morbidity and mortality conferences.

Methods

Multi-institutional survey.
